CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The 2017 Landry Cancer Research Fellowships

 

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:

5:00pm Monday, January 9, 2017

 

PURPOSE:

The Landry Cancer Research Fellowships are available to outstanding rising G3 students working in all fields relevant to basic or applied cancer research. Research projects relating to any aspect of cancer are eligible. Research projects relevant to Small Cell Lung Cancer are strongly encouraged. These fellowships will be held in the third and fourth year, and will provide 18 consecutive months of tuition and stipend support, discretionary funds to promote professional development and attendance of international/national conferences in cancer biology and related topics. Recipients may select either to begin funding in July 2017 or January 2018. Fellows and alumni of this program will serve as ambassadors and role models for the next generation of scientists through participation in Landry Cancer Biology Consortium training events.

 

ELIGIBILITY AND OTHER CRITERIA:

*   Applications are solicited from current HILS G2 students

*   Applicant's thesis project must be relevant to basic or applied cancer research

 

QUALIFICATIONS

*   Feasibility and quality of the proposed research

*   Outstanding academic record

 

APPLICATION PACKAGE:

Submitted by applicant:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of support from applicant's thesis adviser and name of non-thesis adviser who will submit one letter of support separately (see below)

 

  • One page research statement, which can include a brief personal scientific background, goals of research, and at least one key finding.  Your statement should describe your proposed area of thesis research and how it will contribute to one or more of the following areas:

1.   a deeper fundamental understanding of biological, chemical, physical or design principles relevant to cancer in the broadest sense.

2.   innovative interdisciplinary approaches and/or technologies that will facilitate transformative research in the future.

3.   novel therapeutic tools, applied science and/or strategies likely to push forward the frontier of cancer medicine.

Care should be taken to highlight current or potential collaborations contributing to the project that are likely to build lasting connections across department and school boundaries at Harvard University.

 

Submitted separately:

  • One letter of support from a non-thesis adviser (confidential recommendation). This individual should be familiar with the applicant’s recent research potential.

 

Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

 

DEADLINE AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR EMAIL SUBMISSION

Submitted application materials and non-thesis adviser letter of support must be submitted via email by the deadline of 5:00pm EST on Monday, January 9th, 2017 to Dr. Megan Mittelstadt (megan_mittelstadt@hms.harvard.edu) with subject line "Landry Cancer Research Fellowship".

 

PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION REVIEW

Following the application submission deadline, applications will be reviewed for qualification and ranked by members of the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium (LCBC) steering committee. Announcement of award receipt will occur on or by Monday, March 6th, 2017.
